Ophthalmology is the branch of science that deals with eye, its disease and refractive errors. Optometry & ophthalmic technology covers various techniques and methods employed in the practice of ophthalmology using several types of equipment, including but not limited to estimating errors of refraction and prescription of glasses.

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVE

Brief Description of the course

Students of this course are trained to assist the eye surgeon in all aspects of ophthalmology including refraction, O.P.D procedures, ophthalmic nursing and community ophthalmology. This is achieved by classroom teaching and supervised practical work in the O.P.D, Wards, OT and eyes camps.

The course involves hands-on training in

  • Refraction
  • Biometry
  • Computerized perimeter
  • Ophthalmic anesthesia and other procedures.

Conducted by: Bharat Sevak Samaj (BSS)

The course is conducted by the Bharat Sevak Samaj (BSS) and is run in accordance with their guidelines by Asian Institute of Allied Health Sciences. Rules and regulations framed by Asian Institute of Allied Health Sciences for this purpose will be binding on the students.

Aims

  • To equip the students with basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology and disease related to the eye.
  • To prepare the students to assist the eye surgeon in ophthalmic surgery, in the O.P.D of the hospital as well as outdoor eye camps.
  • To familiarize the students with various types of ophthalmic equipment.
  • To acquaint the students with first-aid measure in ophthalmology, ophthalmic emergencies, nursing methods, operation theatre techniques and community ophthalmology.
  • To train the students to estimate errors of refraction.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course the students will be able to

  • Independently estimate errors refraction and accurately prescribe spectacles.
  •  Calculate I.O.L power for cataract surgery (biometry).
  • Assist in ophthalmic surgery including the handing and sterilization of ophthalmic surgical instruments.
  • Administer local anesthesia for ophthalmic surgery.

Eligibility

  •  Basic educational qualification. 10+2  passed from a recognized Board Examination with Physics, Chemistry  Biology and English with 50% marks.
  • The candidate must have completed 17 years of age and must be less than 25 years of age on the date of commencement of the course.
