Tips to Ensure a Disease Free Monsoon

Monsoon season brings great respite of all living beings after scorching heat of summer. However, diseases also become common in this season as bacteria thrive due to warm, wet and humid weather. In this article, let’s find out the common monsoon ailments and their prevention methods.

 

Typhoid

Typhoid is a water-borne disease that can trouble your health during the rainy season. You can suffer from this illness if you have contaminated water or food as it transmits bacteria into your system. Prolonged fever, severe stomach pain and headache are symptoms of typhoid.

Prevention

  1. Avoid typhoid patients
  2. Don’t eat outside
  3. Maintain personal hygiene
  4. Consume clean water

Viral Fever

The viral fever becomes more prevalent during monsoon. Common symptoms of this disease are constant sneezing, sore throat and fever.

Prevention

    1. Avoid getting wet in the rain
    2. Have a glass of hot turmeric milk
    3. Gargle with warm water to relieve sore throat
    4. Don’t eat outside
    5. Wash hands regularly
    6. Cover your mouth while sneezing and coughing

    Malaria

    Malaria is one of the most common ailments that trouble people in India during monsoon. Waterlogging is the biggest reason this disease spreads so widely. Patients suffering from malaria can experience a fever at regular intervals, muscle pain, bouts of shivering and weakness.

    Prevention

    1. Don’t let water accumulate in your area
    2. Use mosquito nets and repellents
    3. Prevent mosquito bite
    4. Take antimalarial medications

    Cholera

    Cholera is another fatal disease that thrives during the rainy season. Bacteria that causes this disease is found in contaminated food or water and poor hygiene also helps in spreading this ailment. Common symptoms of cholera are; severe diarrhoea, vomiting and muscle cramps.

    Prevention

    1. Get vaccinated
    2. Wash hands frequently
    3. Drink bottled or boiled water
    4. Have well-cooked food
    5. Avoid eating outside
    6. Eat peeled vegetables and fruits

    Jaundice

    Jaundice is an ailment in which the patients can have a yellowish tinge to skin and sclerae (white part of the eye) that is caused by hyperbilirubinemia (excess of bilirubin the blood). Patient’s skin and sclerae colour may get brown if the disease is highly elevated.

    Prevention

    1. Get hepatitis A & B vaccines shot
    2. Avoid alcohol use
    3. Take antimalarial medications
    4. Maintain personal hygiene
    5. Avoid contaminated food & water

    Food poisoning

    Gastroenteritis or food poisoning is a very common disease in India. Vomiting and diarrhoea are major symptoms of this disease.

    Prevention

    1. Wash hands regularly
    2. Avoid drinking tap water or drinks with ice
    3. Don’t eat street food
    4. Avoid eating raw vegetables like salad
